Haley Lyn Irwin (born June 6, 1988 in Thunder Bay , Ontario ) is a Canadian ice hockey player who has played for Les Canadiennes de Montréal in the Canadian Women's Hockey League (CWHL) since 2012 .
Career
Haley Irwin played on boys' teams until she was 16 and was the first Thunder Bay girl to be accepted into an AAA-level girl. At the age of 16 she switched to women's ice hockey and was accepted into the U22 national team of Canada.
With the Ontario regional team, the Ontario Reds , she won the 2005 National Women's U18 Tournament in Salmon Arm , BC. At club level, she played for the Toronto Eros Junior, with whom she won the PWHL championship and the OWHA regional championship in 2005 and 2006, respectively. During the 2005/06 season she was team captain of the Eros and was awarded as MVP of the Eros in both the 2004/05 season and 2005/06. In 2007 she was called up again in Ontario 's national team and won with this the bronze medal of the national championship ( Esso Women's Nationals ).
She was also used for the women's team of the Eros in the National Women's Hockey League .
Minnesota Duluth Bulldogs
In the summer of 2007, Shannon Miller hired Duluth as the head coach of women's ice hockey for the University of Minnesota and Haley Irwin for the University of Minnesota. In the fall of 2007, Irwin began studying public health while playing for the Bulldogs, the university's ice hockey team, in the Western Collegiate Hockey Association (WCHA). In the 2007/08 season, Irwin was the top scorer of the WCHA and was named Rookie of the Year at the end of the season . In addition, she was elected to the First All-Star Team , All-Rookie Team and WCHA All-Tournament Team . In the decisive game for the championship of the NCAA Division I Irwin scored the winning goal.
During her second season at the university, Irwin scored 22 goals and 22 assists in 39 games and again reached the NCAA "Frozen Four" tournament with the Bulldogs. In addition, she was re-elected to the All-WCHA team . During the 2009/10 season, she took a break from college ice hockey and instead prepared with the national team for the 2010 Winter Olympics.
During the 2010/11 season, Irwin was again the top scorer of the WCHA and finished second in this NCAA-wide ranking with a points average of 2.29 points per game (32 points: 17 goals, 15 assists in 14 games). She was reappointed captain of the Bulldogs for the following season. In the game against Minnesota State University, Mankato on February 18, 2012, Irwin scored the 200th scorer point of her NCAA career.
International
For Canada , Irwin took part in the 2009 and 2011 World Championships . She was also in her country's squad at the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver and 2014 in Sochi . In 2009 and 2010 she and her team took part in the 4 Nations Cup .
