In 2007 she graduated from the School of Business with a major in Marketing. Between 2007 and 2009 she was active for the Edmonton Chimos in the Western Women's Hockey League . For 2011/12 Mikkelson became part of the newly formed Alberta team (a merger of the Edmonton Chimos and the Strathmore Rockies , now Calgary Inferno ) and played with them in the CWHL.

After the 2014 Sochi Olympics, Mikkelson took a break from ice hockey to start a family with her husband Scott. After the birth of her son in September 2015, she began training and returned to Inferno over the course of the season. At the end of the 2015/16 season she won the Clarkson Cup with the Inferno .
