history
The Oval X-Treme were founded in 1995 as an amateur women's ice hockey team in Calgary and quickly found a regional rival in the Edmonton Chimos . In 2002, the Oval X-Treme and the Edmonton Chimos were asked to join the National Women's Hockey League (NWHL). The two teams formed with the Vancouver Griffins as a result, the Western Division of the NWHL.
After the end of the 2003/04 season, in which the Oval X-Treme and the Chimos alone had formed the Western Division, both franchises left the NWHL and founded the Western Women's Hockey League with three other teams .
Since the Canadian women's national team was based in Calgary in the 2000s, many Canadian internationals played for the Oval X-Treme, including Hayley Wickenheiser , Danielle Goyette and Cassie Campbell . This is why the Oval X-Treme have always been one of the most successful women's teams in Canada and have won five championships in a row.
Before the 2009/10 season, the Calgary Oval X-Treme stopped playing.
