history

The Mississauga Chiefs were founded in 1993 as an amateur women's ice hockey team in Mississauga and were immediately inducted into the regional championship, the Central Ontario Women's Hockey League . Parallel to the first team, an ice hockey program for girls and women, the Mississauga Girls Hockey League , had existed since the 1970s . In 1995 the Chiefs won the Ontario Provincial championship and then took part in the Esso Women's Nationals , where they finished fourth.

With the conversion of the COWHL into the National Women's Hockey League in February 1999, gaming operations were further professionalized. In 2000 the Chiefs changed their name to Mississauga Ice Bears .

In 2003 the club moved to the neighboring community of Oakville .

After the 2006/07 season , the NWHL stopped playing and was replaced by the newly formed Canadian Women's Hockey League . The Oakville Ice merged with the Mississauga Eros to form the new Mississauga Chiefs and twice (2008 and 2009) reached the play-off finals for the Clarkson Cup .
