Hilary Atwood Knight (* 12. July 1989 in Palo Alto , California ) is an American ice hockey player who since March 2018 in Les Canadiennes de Montréal in the Canadian Women's Hockey League on the position of the striker plays. Knight has been a member of the United States women's national ice hockey team since 2007, and with eight gold medals at world championships, she and teammate Kacey Bellamy are the most successful US women in this competition.

Career

Hilary Knight was born in Palo Alto , California , but grew up in a household of skiers in Hanover , New Hampshire . Her parents could not ice skate. Her cousin Chip Knight was a skier at the Winter Olympics three times. Hilary Knight skied for the first time at the age of two before her mother had the idea that she should learn to skate too . When Hilary was five, her family moved from California to Chicago, where she started playing ice hockey. Her three younger brothers also learned the sport and Hilary always strived to "be better than my younger brothers" .

As a student, she played for Choate Rosemary Hall and the Connecticut Polar Bears U19 team . After graduating from high school, she had numerous offers from colleges to accept. Knight chose the University of Wisconsin because there worked with Mark Johnson, an experienced ice hockey coach who was also national coach and was supposed to prepare them for the 2010 Winter Olympics .

Success in the NCAA

Hilary Knight played college ice hockey for four years in the Western Collegiate Hockey Association (WCHA), a league of the NCAA . She reached the NCAA final tournament, the so-called Frozen Four, in all four years with the Wisconsin Badgers , the university's ice hockey team . While the Badgers lost the NCAA Championship finals in 2008 and 2012, they won the Frozen Four final game in 2009 and 2011, reaching the college championship in those two years.

During the 2009/10 season Hilary Knight interrupted her studies to prepare for the Vancouver Winter Olympics with the national team and coach Mark Johnson .

CWHL and NWHL

After she finished her studies in 2012, she was signed by the Boston Blades from the Canadian Women's Hockey League (CWHL) and won the Clarkson Cup with her new team in 2013 . With this, Knight has won the three most important trophies in women's ice hockey. For the performances shown in the course of the season, she was also named Most Valuable Player . In 2015, she repeated winning the title with the Blades before moving to the Boston Pride from the newly formed National Women's Hockey League . With these, she won the Isobel Cup in the league's premier season and remained loyal to the team until the end of the 2016/17 season . She then prepared for the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang and, following the tournament, joined the Les Canadiennes de Montréal from the CWHL in March 2018 .

International

Hilary Knight began representing the United States internationally early in her career. So she belonged to the youth national teams of the USA. In 2006 she made her debut at the 4 Nations Cup for the women's national team . She completed her first world championship in 2007 and was the youngest player on the national team with which she won the silver medal. As a result, she played at nine world championships until 2017 , winning seven gold and two other silver medals. At her first Olympic Winter Games in Vancouver in 2010 , she scored one goal and seven assists, helping her team win the silver medal. In the 2011 world championships , which were held in Switzerland , she was the top scorer of the tournament with five goals and nine assists and was consequently elected to the All-Star team. At the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang , she finally won Olympic gold on the third attempt.
