The Worcester Blades (until 2018 Boston Blades ) are an American women's ice hockey team from Worcester , which was founded in 2010 as Boston Blades and has since played in the Canadian Women's Hockey League . In 2018 the team moved from Boston to Worcester. In their history, the Blades finished the regular season of the CWHL twice as the best team on points and twice won the Clarkson Cup (2013 and 2015).

history

Boston Blades players: # 8 Caitlin Cahow , # 4 Angela Ruggiero and # 22 Kacey Bellamy (2011)

The Blades were founded in 2010 as an expansion franchise to the Canadian Women's Hockey League . This also made the Blades the first CWHL franchise in the United States. In September 2010, Erin Whitten was introduced as the first head coach. In order to fill the player roster of the Blades, an expansion draft was carried out by the CWHL , in which the Blades could sign Angela Ruggiero , among others .

At the Clarkson Cup tournament in Markham in 2013 , the Blades achieved their first major title win when they defeated the Montréal Stars 5-2 in the final and thus won the Clarkson Cup. Two years later, the Boston team was able to repeat this success. These successes were based, among other things, on the fact that the squad consisted partly of US and Canadian internationals . So played, among others, Kacey Bellamy , Meghan Duggan , Hilary Knight , Gigi Marvin , Molly Schaus , Anne Schleper , Kelli Stack , Geneviève Lacasse and Tara Watchorn for the Blades.

In the 2017/18 season, the Blades played their home games at the Lawrence Larsen Skating Rink at the Mike Eruzione Center in Winthrop , a suburb of Boston. In the summer of 2018, the Blades moved from Boston to Worcester .
