Janine Weber (born June 19, 1991 in Innsbruck ) is an Austrian ice hockey player who has been under contract with the Metropolitan Riveters in the National Women's Hockey League since 2015 .
Career
Janine Weber began ice hockey at the age of eight in the ice skating school of HC Innsbruck and worked in the club's (male) junior teams for the next nine years. As a 17-year-old, she made her debut for the Austrian women's national team. In 2009 she received her Abitur at Reithmann Gymnasium in Innsbruck and then moved to the Austrian capital to join the best women's ice hockey club in the country at the time, the EHV Sabers Vienna . With the Sabers won two championship titles in the EWHL and four national championships in the following years .
With the help of an American teammate, she received a scholarship to Providence College in 2013, where she studied education between 2013 and 2014. At the same time, she played for the Friars , the college's ice hockey team, in Hockey East .
After a year at college, she received an offer from the semi-professional Boston Blades and played for them in the Canadian Women's Hockey League in the 2014/15 season . While playing ice hockey, she taught at a school for children with developmental disabilities in Boston. On March 7, 2015, she scored the winning goal in the final game of the Clarkson Cup in the third minute of extra time to beat the Stars de Montréal 3-2 . This goal increased their notoriety in North America significantly, so that the Hockey Hall of Fame wanted their stick from the final game for the exhibition. Weber then signed a contract in Sweden with Linköpings HC with an exit clause for North America. In a few weeks she was the first player in the newly founded National Women's Hockey League (NWHL) to be signed by the New York Riveters , making her Austria's first professional ice hockey player. Her first year in New York finished Weber as the fourth best scorer on her team and received a new one-year contract ($ 13,500 salary). Coach Chad Wiseman also promoted her to the first-line center.
International
In 2008 Janine Weber made her debut for the Austrian national team and was promoted to Division I at the World Cup in Division II . In 2009, she took part in the U18 National Team in the World Cup for U18 Women in Division I and scored during the tournament five scorer points.
She has been an integral part of the national team since 2009 and represented Austria at the annual World Championships in Division I and in the 2013 and 2017 Olympic qualifications . At the World Cup of Division IA 2013 she was the top scorer of the tournament with seven points.
