history

The poster We Can Do It! (approx. 1942) served as a template for the Riveters logo

The Riveters were founded in 2015 under the name New York Riveters as a franchise of the National Women's Hockey League . The franchise name and logo make reference to Rosie the Riveter , a fictional, popular female character from the Second World War .

In the summer of 2015, the Riveters signed Janine Weber as the first player , making her the first ever NWHL player. In the 2015 NWHL Draft , the Riveters selected Alex Carpenter first , who won the silver medal at the 2014 Winter Olympics .

The club's first home venue was the Aviator Sports & Events Center in Brooklyn , New York City . In May 2016, the Riveters signed Amanda Kessel . Kessel received a total of US $ 26,000 for the one-year contract, making her the highest-paid player in the league at the time.

As part of the NWHL Draft 2016 , the Riveters again had the first right to vote and chose Kelsey Koelzer from Princeton University .

The Riveters have played their home games at Barnabas Health Hockey House in Newark since the 2016/17 season . In the run-up to the 2017/18 season , the Riveters entered into a partnership with the New Jersey Devils from the National Hockey League (NHL), making them the first NWHL team to officially cooperate with an NHL franchise. In the course of this, the team renamed itself Metropolitan Riveters and adopted the team colors of the Devils. In the 2017/18 season, the Riveters not only won the regular season , but also defeated the Buffalo Beauts in the play-off final , thus winning the Isobel Cup .
