The 2017/18 season was the third season of the National Women's Hockey League (NWHL), the top division in US women's ice hockey . The season began on October 1, 2017 with the first game of the regular season and ended on March 25, 2018 with the final game for the Isobel Cup . The Metropolitan Riveters secured this for the first time in the final against last year's champion Buffalo Beauts . A total of four teams took part in the game.
The New York Riverters started the season in early October under their new name Metropolitan Riveters , after they moved to Newark , New Jersey last year and entered into a partnership with the New Jersey Devils from the National Hockey League before the start of the season . In December 2017 the Buffalo Beauts were taken over by the owners of the Buffalo Sabers .
Due to the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang , South Korea , numerous top players did not participate in the game this season and instead prepared for the upcoming tournament in training camps of their respective national associations. In addition, the Russian national women's ice hockey team played five test matches in October 2017 under the name Summit Series 2017 against the teams in the league, all of which they won.
Mode and participants
The four teams - namely the Boston Pride , Buffalo Beauts , Connecticut Whale and Metropolitan Riveters - first played a five-fold round against two teams each and a six-fold round against one of the teams in the regular season , so that each team played 16 games. A total of 32 games were played during the season.
The ranking of the regular season resulted in the seeding list for the subsequent play-offs , in which the first placed met the fourth placed in the table. The next series contested the second and third place. As in the previous year, the teams played the play-offs in a knockout round.
NWHL Draft
The third Entry Draft of the NWHL took place on August 17, 2017 - as in the previous year - in Brooklyn . The order of the draft was determined by the result of the regular season of the previous year . The Connecticut Whale had the first vote as the lowest point team in the preseason, but had given it to the Boston Pride in a previous transfer deal . They selected the American goalkeeper Kaitlin Burt from Boston College as the first overall position . A total of 20 players were drafted again in five rounds.
