Saara Niemi , b. Tuominen , (born January 1, 1986 in Ylöjärvi ) is a Finnish ice hockey player and coach who has been under contract with the Helsinki Red Wings in the Naisten Mestis , Finland's second highest women's ice hockey division, since 2015 .
Career
Saara Niemi played ice hockey for the Ikurin Vire club from the age of five .
In the Naisten SM-sarja she played from 2003 for Ilves Tampere . With this team she won the Finnish championship in 2006 , the runner-up in 2011 and the IIHF European Women Champions Cup in 2011. From 2006 she played in the United States for the University of Minnesota-Duluth and was team captain of the Bulldogs for three years . With the Bulldogs she won the championship of the WCHA and the NCAA in 2008 and 2010, respectively .
She ended her career in 2011 and became a junior coach for the southern region at the Finnish Ice Hockey Federation. She returned to the ice for Helsinki Red Wings in April 2015 when she played for the club's women's team in the third-rate Suomen-sarja. Since 2016 she has been playing with the Red Wings in the second-class Naisten Mestis . Since the beginning of the 2017/18 season , the Finn has been the assistant coach of the Kunlun Red Star from the Canadian Women's Hockey League .
International
Saara Niemi played for many years in the Finnish women's ice hockey team , with which she took part in the 2006 and 2010 Winter Olympics and the 2004 , 2005 , 2007 , 2008 and 2009 World Championships . At these tournaments she won a total of four bronze medals.
Today she lives in Helsinki and is a physical education teacher at the Kisakallio Sport Institute . She also looks after Finland's U18 national junior team as an assistant coach.
