The Shenzhen KRS Vanke Rays are a Chinese women ice hockey team from Shenzhen , which was founded in 2017 as Kunlun Red Star Women's Ice Hockey ( Chinese  深圳 崑崙 鴻星 or 崑崙 鴻星 , Pinyin Shēnzhèn Kūnlún Hóngxīng or Kūnlún Hóngxīng ). Between 2017 and 2019, the team played in the Canadian Women's Hockey League and is subordinate to the Chinese Ice Hockey Association (CIHA). The women's team is financed by the KHL participant of the same name, Kunlun Red Star . In 2018 the Kunlun Red Star merged with the second Chinese CWHL participant, the Vanke Rays .

history

The coaching team consisted of Digit Murphy and their assistants Saara Niemi and Sun Rui in the first season .

As part of the 2017 CWHL Draft, the Red Star voted Noora Räty in the first round and Alexandra Carpenter in the second , after management had previously signed Kelli Stack . Ultimately, half of the team consisted of Chinese, the other half of North American and European athletes.

In order to minimize travel costs and the burdens for the players, the entire team stayed four times in North America, each for about three weeks. In the 2017/18 season, the Red Star finished second after the main round and reached the final of the Clarkson Cup in the play-offs , which they lost 2-1 after extra time.

Before the 2018/19 season, the second Chinese CWHL participant, the Vanke Rays , were dissolved or merged with Kunlun Red Star. The resulting team played under the name Shenzhen KRS Vanke Rays in the CWHL. After the 2018/19 season, the CWHL was dissolved. The Kunlun Red Star women's team then switched to the Shenskaya Hockey League for the 2019/20 season and, like all other KRS teams, plays in competitions organized from Russia
