The women's ice hockey world championship was held for the first time in 1990. The first tournament of the eight best women's hockey crews of took place from 19 to 25 March in Ottawa in Canada instead. In addition to hosts Canada and the USA, the 5 best teams from the European ice hockey championship in 1989 (Finland, Sweden, Germany, Norway, Switzerland) and the Asian champions in 1988, with runner-up Japan representing the renouncing champions China, qualified. First Ice Hockey World Women's Champion was Canada. The best scorer of the tournament was the American Cindy Curley with eleven goals and twelve assists.
