Anne-Kristiina Haanpää , b. Bäckman , (born May 25, 1959 in Tampere ) is a former Finnish ice hockey player who was active for Ilves Tampere and the Keravan Shakers in the Naisten SM-sarja for many years and was Finnish champion eight times . Haanpää took part in five European and four world championships with the Finnish women's national team , winning four gold and five bronze medals. After retiring from her career, she was active as an ice hockey referee and has been a referee supervisor at the International Ice Hockey Federation since 2009 .
Career
Anne Haanpää (nee Bäckman) grew up in the Tampere suburbs and began ice hockey at the age of four. “ We lived just 200 meters from a sports field ... and in winter it was a very popular ice rink. One day my mother put on ice skates and gave me a hockey stick for balance ” . Later, " [she] was very disappointed because girls were not allowed to play in boys' teams . "
Finland's first women's team was founded in Tampere in 1971 and Haanpää joined them. At the end of the 1970s, this team played for the first time against Canadian women's teams before the Naisten SM-sarja was founded in 1982 . During this time Haanpää mostly played for Ilves Tampere, but in the 1982/83 and 1986/87 seasons she was active at Porin Ässät - in 1982/83 she attended a business school, in 1986/87 due to the birth of her son.
In 1987 the Finnish women's national team was founded, to which Haanpää belonged from the beginning and with which they won the first IIHF European Women's Championship in 1989 . At the first World Championship participation of the Finnish lionesses in 1990 in Ottawa , she led her team as captain on the ice. In the third place match, Finland beat Sweden 6-3 to win the bronze medal. Haanpää completed a total of five European and four world championships and won four gold and five bronze medals.
In 1998, shortly before the start of the Olympic Winter Games in Nagano , the first women's Olympic ice hockey tournament , national trainer Rauno Korpi removed her from the Finnish squad. Because of this disappointment, she ended her career and received various offers to work as a coach or referee . However, she initially refused both before accepting the offer from the Finnish referee chairman a few months later. Between 1999 and 2006 she regularly directed games of the Naisten SM-sarja and was also nominated for the 2000 and 2001 World Championships . In 2002 she took part as a referee at the Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City .
She also played in the 2004 Olympic qualification, the 2003 Asian Winter Games , the 4 Nations Cup 2002 and the IIHF European Women Champions Cup 2005 .
Haanpää has been referee supervisor at IIHF since 2009, including at the 2013 World Cup in Ottawa, and works as the Nääshalli sports facility manager for the city of Tampere. In her free time, she continues to play ice hockey.
In 2014 she was inducted into the Finnish Ice Hockey Hall of Fame as the 227th person overall in the Referee category .
