The 1982/83 season was the first edition of the highest Finnish women's ice hockey league , the Naisten SM-sarja . The league was carried out by the Finnish ice hockey association Suomen Jääkiekkoliitto . HJK Helsinki won the first championship title .

The ten teams played in two groups of five teams each. Each team played 8 games. There were 2 points for a win and one for a draw. The best two teams in the two preliminary round groups qualified for the final tournament.

Due to the equality of points and the same goal difference (+22) between Ässät and Tiikerit, a playoff was played, which Tiikerit won 7: 6 and thus qualified for the final round.
