Alexander Sergeyevich Posnikow ( Russian Александр Сергеевич Посников ; born December 14 . Jul / 26. December  1846 greg. In the district Vyazma ; † 22. August 1922 in Uskoje in the district of Moscow ) was a Russian economist and university lecturer .

Life

Posnikow came from a noble family and grew up on the family seat in the district of Vyazma. His father Sergei Gavrilowitsch Posnikow was the judge of the district there. Alexander Posnikow attended Smolensk Gymnasium from 1855 to 1862 and then studied at the Law Faculty of Moscow University with a degree in 1869. He stayed at the university to prepare for a professorial career, and he also continued his education abroad. He passed the master's degree in political economy and statistics . He took part in the conference of the liberal economists under Nikolai Sieber and Alexander Tschuprow , who advocated a democratic state order in Russia and turned to the economic theory of Marxism . In 1871 Posnikov's master's dissertation on the origin of the basic loan appeared, in which he justified the liberal demand for cheap loans for agriculture and defended the theory of stable small peasant economics. In 1873 Posnikow became a private lecturer at the Yaroslavl Demidow Jura Lyceum . In 1875 he defended the master's dissertation The Community Land (Volume 1) at Moscow University . In 1876 he became professor of political economy at the New Russian University in Odessa . In 1878 he defended his doctoral dissertation The Community Land (Volume 2) at the University of Moscow . In 1882 he gave up his office and retired to his family residence in the district of Vyazma.

In 1879 and 1896, Posnikov was elected aristocratic marshal and head of the statistics office of the district of Vyazma. 1883-1907 he was honorary magistrate of the district and 1886-1897 with editor of the Russian news .

In 1902 Posnikov became dean of the economic department of the St. Petersburg Polytechnic Institute and headed the political economy course . In 1908 he became director of the institute.

In 1906 Posnikov was one of the founders of the Democratic Reform Party under the leadership of MM Kowalewski and others close to the Cadets . He spoke out against Stolypin's agrarian reform . 1909–1911 Posnikow was president of the Imperial Free Economic Society . 1911-1916 he wrote a number of essays for the Brockhaus-Efron encyclopedia. 1911–1912 he was a member of the State Bank Council of the Ministry of Finance. In 1912 he was appointed to the Privy Council. The Council of the Polytechnic Institute elected him an honorary member of the institute.

1912-1917 Posnikow was a member of the 4th State Duma for the St. Petersburg Governorate and deputy chairman of the faction of progressives . He was a member of various commissions and worked in particular on reforms for agriculture and the statutes for state universities.

After the February Revolution in 1917 , Posnikov was entrusted by the provisional government with the reorganization and unification of the Adelsgrundbank and the Bauerngrundbank , of which he was director from March to May 1917. In April 1917 he became chairman of the provisional government's main land tenure committee and senator of the 2nd department of the governing senate .

After the October Revolution , Posnikov withdrew to his family residence in the district of Vyazma. In 1918 the council of the Petrograd Polytechnic Institute appointed him to the chair of political economy. He also taught at the Agronomy Institute and the Forest Science Institute .

Posnikov died in the Uskoye sanatorium in the Moscow district. He was married (widowed in 1912) and had three children.
