history

The building of the administration and the faculty of physics

The university emerged from the so-called School for Higher Sciences ( Высших наук училище ), which was donated in 1803 by the Russian industrialist Pavel Grigorjewitsch Demidow , a great-grandson of the iron manufacturer Nikita Demidow . This institution, which was originally supposed to train state officials, was one of the oldest universities in the Russian province. Teaching began on August 13, 1804 under the direction of seven professors and initially with a very small number of students.

In 1834 the school was reformed and from then on it was regarded as a purely legal university. Since 1868 it has been called the Legal Lyceum "PG Demidow" and by the beginning of the 20th century developed into one of the most renowned legal academies in the Russian Empire . Around 100 graduates completed their studies there every year.

Shortly after the October Revolution , the Lyceum was dissolved by a government decision in 1919 and converted into a full university, which was first named Yaroslavl State University . After the pedagogical faculty was spun off into an independent pedagogical university (which still exists today), the university was dissolved, among other things, due to financial difficulties. It was not until 1970 that the university was re-established on the occasion of the celebrations for the 100th birthday of revolutionary leader Lenin . Since 1995 the university bears the name of its founder Pawel Demidow again.
