Konstantin Dmitrijewitsch Balmont
Konstantin Balmont ( Russian Константин Дмитриевич Бальмонт ; * 3. jul. / 15. June 1867 greg. On the estate Gumnischtschi at Vladimir ; † 23. December 1942 in Noisy-le-Grand in Paris ) was a Russian poet of symbolism from the so-called silver age of Russian poetry.
The influence of symbolism was already noticeable in his first collection of poems, Under the Northern Sky, from 1894. 1903 followed Be like the sun , which also gained some popularity. Igor Stravinsky wrote the cantata Le Roi des étoiles in 1911/12 based on a poem by Balmont. Other poets, especially Alexander Blok , subsequently overtook Balmont; his works after 1910 are generally considered mediocre. Balmont, who was initially inclined to communism , later rejected it; In 1920 he emigrated to France, where he was already before the First World Warhad stopped. He translated a number of Western classics into Russian, including Henrik Ibsen and Edgar Allan Poe . Some of these editions are still available today, but are considered to be unsuccessful in their transfers of the poetic style. Sergei Rachmaninoff's choral work Die Glocken , op 35, was created on the basis of a very free translation, almost a repositioning of the four Poe works by Balmont. Sergei Prokofjew dedicated his 3rd Piano Concerto (1917–21) to Balmont. Balmont thanked him for the dedication with a symbolist sonnet , which is intended to represent his poetic impression of the work on him as a listener. He died in "loneliness, misery, sickness of the soul" in his exile.
