Carl Wilhelm (born February 9, 1872 in Vienna , † September 1936 in London ) was an Austrian actor , film director and screenwriter .

Life

Wilhelm began his stage career in Graz in 1899 . His career took him to Znojmo (1900), Düsseldorf (1901) and Berlin (1902). In 1905 he was engaged as the first hero and lover of the Vienna Burgtheater . In 1907/08 he also played under Max Reinhardt in Berlin.

His repertoire included the title characters in Goethe's Faust and Egmont , The Count of Essex by Antonio Coello and The Pastor of Kirchfeld by Ludwig Anzengruber .

As an actor and assistant director, he finally approached the new medium of film. Soon he concentrated entirely on the direction. After his first work, the short documentary film A Merry Winter's Day in Berlin's Grunewald , shot for producer Oskar Messter in 1909 , Wilhelm worked for a number of other Berlin production companies. In the period before the First World War , he shot a series of comedies with the silent film star Leo Peukert in the lead role for Deutsche Mutoskop- und Biograph GmbH in Lankwitz and BB-Film-Fabrikation Bolten-Baeckers in Steglitz .

His two comedies with Ernst Lubitsch , shot in 1913 and 1914, were very successful; In 1919 a critic wrote with reference to the first of the two: " The company is getting married and Meyer from Berlin is still our best light plays."

In 1915 he worked with his Cewe-Films and in 1920/21 with Carl-Wilhelm-Film GmbH as his own producer. Carl Wilhelm remained a busy director until the end of the silent film era .

After the National Socialists seized power in 1933, Wilhelm, who was of Jewish origin, returned to Vienna. He was the father of the screenwriters Hans Wilhelm and Wolfgang Wilhelm. In October 1935 he left Vienna, emigrated to his son Wolfgang in London and died the following year.
