The 2009/10 season was the 28th edition of the highest Finnish women's ice hockey league , the Naisten SM-sarja . The league is organized by the Finnish ice hockey association Suomen Jääkiekkoliitto . SM is an abbreviation for suomenmestaruus (German: Finnish championship).
mode
Initially, all teams played a simple round with a return leg. The last three teams of this preliminary round took part in the relegation with three representatives from the second highest league. The top six played another easy round among themselves. The two best of the final round reached the semifinals directly, the other four played the other two semifinal places among themselves. The play-offs were carried out in the best-of-five mode . There was only one game for third place.

Preliminary round
The preliminary round was played with all participants in a simple round-trip round. The teams in the first six places qualified for the final round. The last three had to fight to stay in relegation.

Relegation
In the relegation, the last two of the Naisten SM-sarja competed against the first three of the Divisioona in a double round trip. As a result, KalPa Kuopio rose to the highest Finnish women's ice hockey league, JYP Jyväskylä and APV Kuortane held the class.

Main round
In the main round, the order of the places for the two groups in which the semi-finalists were determined was played out. The results of the preliminary round were taken with them. A 1.5 round, i.e. 15 games per team, was played.

Quarter finals
The quarter-finals on March 3, 6 and 7, 2010 were played in two groups. The teams in places 1 and 2 then played crosswise in the semi-finals.

The semi-final games took place on March 9, 10, 16, 18 and 20, 2010 in best-of-five mode.
3rd place match
Only one game was played for 3rd place on April 6, 2010.

final
The final series in the best-of-five mode lasted five games and was played on March 23, 27, 28, 31 and April 3, 2010. After two wins, Espoo had three chances to win the final but lost three games in a row. Four games in the series were decided in extra time. Linda Välimäki scored the decisive goal in the last game in the 77th minute.
