The 1996/97 season was the 15th edition of the highest Finnish women's ice hockey league , the Naisten SM-sarja . The league was carried out by the Finnish ice hockey association Suomen Jääkiekkoliitto . JyP HT secured the championship title for the first time in the club's history . The team of KalPa Kuopio lost the relegation against Kiekko-Karhut and relegated to the second division .

Clubs of the Finnish Women's Ice Hockey League for the 1996/97 season

First, a preliminary round with a home and away leg was played with the eight participating teams. This was followed by the main round of the six best teams as a single round. There were 2 points for a win and one for a draw.

The first four teams in the main round qualified for the play-off semi-finals.
