Petra Maria Pauliina Vaarakallio (born June 17, 1975 in Helsinki ) is a former Finnish ice hockey player , who was active for Kiekko-Espoo and Espoo Blues in Naisten SM-sarja for many years and won the Finnish championship seven times in a row with the Blues won.
Career
At the beginning of her career Petra Vaarakallio played parallel to Hockey and Ringette and in 1992 she won the bronze medal at the Ringette Championship.
From 1992 she played in Espoo ice hockey for Kiekko-Espoo , which was renamed Espoo Blues in 1998 . In the 1994/95 season she ran in the Swiss championship for the EHC St. Gallen and took second place with this.
Between 1999 and 2005 she won the Finnish championship seven times in a row with the Blues .
In November 2005 Petra Vaarakallio sat at the top of the SM Sarja record lists in two categories: In 272 games she scored 270 goals and 334 assists, a total of 604 points scorer. So she outstripped Marianne Ihalainen in the categories of assists and total points. By the end of her career, she increased her points to 280 goals, 351 assists and 631 points scorer in the regular season as well as 33 goals, 53 assists and 86 points in the play-offs.
During the 2006/07 season she returned once more to the Swiss championship at the club, which has now been renamed DSC Oberthurgau . There she was hired to represent Maritta Becker who was unable to attend . With the DSCO, she was eliminated in the play-off semifinals against EV Zug .
After retiring, she played floorball for the Esport Oilers from Espoo in the 2008/09 season .
International
Petra Vaarakallio was one of the first generation of Finnish national players and represented her home country in a large number of international competitions. She won four bronze medals at world championships (1994, 1997, 1999 and 2000) as well as two gold medals (1993, 1995) and one bronze medal (1996) at European championships .
At the 1998 Winter Olympics in Nagano , she won the bronze medal in the Olympic ice hockey tournament with the Finnish national team . Vaarakallio scored in Nagano on February 8, 1998 the first goal in the history of women's ice hockey at the Olympics. She defeated the Swedish goalkeeper Annica Åhlén after playing 8:35 minutes to the intermittent 1-0 lead. Four years later, at the Olympic Games in Salt Lake City , she finished fourth with the lionesses .
In total, Vaarakallio made 126 appearances for Finland, scoring 51 goals and 67 assists.
