The 5th Women Hockey Championship was held from 23 to 29. March 1996 in the Russian city of Yaroslavl instead. Sweden won the European Championship for the first time after Finland had won the previous four titles .

The teams in places 1 to 5 qualified for the 4th Women's Ice Hockey World Championship in the following year. After this event, the European championships were discontinued, as the world championships should now take place annually - with the exception of the Olympic years.

From March 12 to 16, 1996, the venues for the B group were the cities of Pieš warenany and Trnava in Slovakia .
