Jorma Valtonen (born December 22, 1946 in Turku ) is a former Finnish ice hockey goalkeeper who received numerous individual awards both nationally and internationally during his active time from 1964 to 1987.

Career

Jorma Valtonen began his career as a hockey player in his hometown with TPS Turku , for whose professional team he was active in the SM-sarja from 1964 to 1966 . He then moved within the league to RU-38 Pori , with whom he was Finnish champion straight away in the 1966/67 season . In the following five years the goalkeeper ran for Ässät Pori , the successor club of RU-38. With the club he also won the Finnish championship title in 1971. Especially in his last two years at Ässät he was able to convince personally. In 1971 and 1972 he received the Lynces Academici Goalie Award from SM-sarja, in whose all-star team he was elected in both seasons. In 1972 he was also named Finland's Player of the Year. For the 1972/73 season Valtonen moved within the SM-sarja to Jokerit Helsinki. With the capital club, he was also Finnish champion straight away. After a total of two years he left the club again and joined the 1974/75 season FPS Forssa from the second Finnish division, the I divisioona.

From 1975 to 1978 followed a three-year engagement in the Italian Serie A1 , in which he was first for two seasons for HC Gherdëina and then in the 1977/78 season for HC Alleghe between the posts. With HC Gherdëina he became Italian champion in 1976 . From 1978 to 1980, the long-time national player played for his home club TPS Turku in the top Finnish league, the SM-liiga, which was newly founded in 1975 . He was able to build on his previous achievements and was awarded the Urpo-Ylönen Trophy as the best goalkeeper in the SM-liiga in 1978/79 and 1979/80 . In 1980 he also received the Lynces Academici Goalie Award of the SM-liiga, in whose All-Star Team he was also elected. The 1980/81 season spent Valtonen at the EHC 70 München in the hockey Bundesliga . After only one year he left Bayern again and returned to TPS Turku, for which he played in the SM-liiga until the end of the 1986/87 season. In the seasons 1981/82 and 1984/85 he was again runner-up with his team.

In 1989 Valtonen was inducted into the Finnish Hockey Hall of Fame as the 67th player ever. Ten years later he was also awarded the IIHF Hall of Fame .

Between 1994 and 1996 he was head coach of the Finnish national ice hockey team and won the women's ice hockey championship in 1995 as well as a bronze medal at both world and European championships.

International

For Finland , Valtonen took part in the World Championships in 1970 , 1971 , 1972 , 1973 , 1974 , 1975 , 1976 , 1977 and 1979 . He was particularly convincing at the 1972 World Cup, when he was voted the best goalkeeper of the tournament.

Furthermore, he was in his country's squad at the 1972 Winter Olympics in Sapporo , 1980 in Lake Placid and 1984 in Sarajevo and in 1976 at the Canada Cup .
