The 1980/81 season of the ice hockey Bundesliga was the 23rd season of the highest German ice hockey league and the first in which the champions were played in play-off mode based on the North American model. The German champions became the SC Riessersee , who beat the Düsseldorfer EG in three finals and won their tenth title. In the 2. Bundesliga the needed Duisburg SC and newcomer EHC 70 München dismount, they were by the ERC Freiburg and Schwenninger ERC replaced.
The season was overshadowed by the so-called passport forgery scandal , a scandal involving foreign players with forged German passports, which resulted in point deductions for the teams in question, Kölner EC and Duisburger SC .

mode
Following the North American model, the German champions have been determined in the play-off system since the 1980/81 season . In the premiere season, the games were played in the " best-of-three " mode, with the team better placed in the preliminary round enjoying the home advantage in the first - and then also in a possible third and decisive game. The best eight teams in the preliminary round, which was played in the form of a double round, qualified for the play-offs. In the quarterfinals, the first played against the eighth, the second against the seventh, the third against the sixth and the fourth against the fifth of the main round. The remaining teams in the preliminary round places 9 to 12 played the two relegated teams in the 2nd Bundesliga in a relegation round. The relegation round was carried out in a single round with all preliminary round points taken. The new mode was initially viewed very critically from a sporting point of view, because the title would not honor the best team of the entire season, but only the best team from the last phase; moreover, in the opinion of the critics, the double round would be degraded to a mere month-long preliminary skirmish. However, the league was able to record significantly higher attendance figures in the play-off games.
Preliminary round
Passport forgery scandal
During the preliminary round it became known that several foreign players with forged German passports had been used in order to circumvent the restriction for foreign players. Two Bundesliga teams were affected by the so-called passport forgery scandal , on the one hand the previous year's climbers Duisburger SC , on the other hand the two-time German champions Cologne EC . For both teams, all games involving players with forged passports were rated as lost with 0: 5 goals. For Duisburger SC this meant relegation, the Cologne EC slipped out of the playoff ranks due to the point deduction and escaped relegation in the relegation round. Since the decision about the point deduction was made very late, the quarter-finals, in which the Cologne EC had also participated, had to be canceled and rescheduled. The EV Fussen , which is already two games had denied in the relegation round (10: 8 against Bad Nauheim and 5: 5 in Duisburg), adjusted according to the playoffs.
On March 9, 1981, the Bundesliga match VfL Bad Nauheim against the Cologne EC came to a mass beating, whereupon the referee, including match, game and disciplinary penalties, imposed a total of 166 penalty minutes.

Relegation round
The relegation round was played as a single round, taking the preliminary round points. After the first two match days, the Cologne EC were subsequently deprived of points, so that the EV Füssen moved up from the relegation round into the playoffs. The first two games were canceled in principle. The Duisburger SC, which had no chance of staying up, decided not to play again in Munich and recognized the 5-1 defeat on February 20. VfL Bad Nauheim received 39 points from the preliminary round to stay in the league. In addition to three away defeats, the team recorded a win against Munich and a draw against Duisburg.

Play-offs
All play-off rounds were played in the " best-of-three " mode.
As a result of the passport forger scandal, so many points were deducted from the Cologne EC that it slipped into the relegation round. By the time that decision was made, the quarter-finals were already over. The DEB decided to cancel the first round and reschedule the games based on the new table. So the EV Füssen moved up for the Cologne EC. Another beneficiary was the Berliner SC, which failed in the first attempt at Mannheim and was able to prevail against Landshut in the second attempt.
