The 1988/89 season of the ice hockey Bundesliga was the 31st season of the top German division. German champions became the SB Rosenheim after the previous series champion and leader after the first round Cologne EC after three consecutive titles with a 1: 7 home defeat in the play-off semi-final against arch-rivals Duesseldorf EC was eliminated prematurely. The ESV Kaufbeuren , which was highly traded before the season, had to relegate to the 2nd Bundesliga after finishing fourth in the relegation round . The EC Hedos Munich took the place of the Kaufbeurer .

Preliminary round

EV Landshut tripped itself on the first day of play. SB Rosenheim was defeated 5: 3 in the opening game, but no game permits were available for some Landshut players, so this game was rated 0: 5 for Rosenheim. The Cologne EC made a similar mistake when they illegally used Roger Nicholas in an 8: 3 win against Eintracht Frankfurt in January . Again, the game was rated 0: 5.
