Daniel "Danny" Held (born November 13, 1961 in Calgary , Alberta ; † January 5, 2015 in Bietigheim-Bissingen , Germany ) was a Canadian - German ice hockey player . The striker played for many years in Germany in the Bundesliga and DEL .

Career as a player

As a junior he played for the Seattle Breakers in the Western Hockey League (WHL) and the Langley Thunder in the British Columbia Hockey League (BCHL) before moving to the Berliner SC for the 1980/81 season. During the season he left Germany and played the rest of the season with the Billings Bighorns in the WHL.

From 1981 to 1983 he played with the Maine Mariners in the American Hockey League before moving to Germany in the summer of 1983 and playing for the Schwenninger ERC , ECD Iserlohn , Eintracht Frankfurt , ESV Kaufbeuren and the EHC Eisbären Berlin in the Bundesliga .

After his naturalization, he also completed 20 international matches for the German national team and played at the 1987 ice hockey world championship .

From 1994/95 he played first for the EHC Eisbären Berlin and then for the Augsburg Panthers in the DEL , before moving to the Heilbronner EC in the first league south during the 1995/96 season. From the 1996/97 season he played for SC Bietigheim-Bissingen until 1999/2000 , before ending his playing career.

Career as a coach

After the end of his playing career, he began to work as a trainer in the youth division at SC Bietigheim-Bissingen .

In the 2002/03 season he was assistant coach of the DEL team at Schwenninger Wild Wings, which was then headed by Tom Pokel . After Pokel was fired , Held trained the Wild Wings together with Bedrich Pastyrik and, thanks to a playdown victory against the Frankfurt Lions , managed with them to qualify for the DEL. Between 2007 and 2009 Held was also the head coach of the Stuttgart Rebels .

During the 2010/11 season , Held replaced Christian Brittig as coach of the Bietigheim Steelers' Bundesliga team before being replaced by Kevin Gaudet during the 2011/12 season . Most recently, Held trained the school team (U-16) of SC Bietigheim-Bissingen. He and his wife also ran Danny's Bar & Grill in Bietigheim. He died in January 2015 after a serious illness.
