The Seattle Thunderbirds are an ice hockey team from Seattle , Washington state . The team has played in one of Canada's three highest junior ice hockey leagues, the Western Hockey League (WHL) , since 1977 . The team's nickname is T-Birds .

history

The Kamloops Chiefs were relocated from Kamloops , British Columbia , and renamed Seattle Breakers prior to the 1977-78 season . In their early days, the Breakers reached the final twice in the West Division, but in 1980 they were defeated by the Victoria Cougars in the best-of-seven series in a sweep . Two years later, Seattle lost 4-2 to the Portland Winter Hawks . In the summer of 1985, the franchise was sold and given its current name, Seattle Thunderbirds. The team had their greatest success with reaching the final of the Ed Chynoweth Cup in the 1996/97 season, in which they were defeated by the Lethbridge Hurricanes 4-0.
