The Portland Winterhawks (until May 2009 Winter Hawks ) are an American ice hockey team from Portland , Oregon , which has played in the junior Western Hockey League since 1976 . The team plays their home games at the 12,000-seat Portland Memorial Coliseum . Each season, however, there are also a few home games played in the neighboring Moda Center, which is larger in terms of spectator capacity .

In the seasons 1981/82 , 1997/98 and 2012/13 , the team won the Ed Chynoweth Cup ( President's Cup until 2007 ), the championship of the WHL. It also won the Memorial Cup , the most important trophy in Canadian junior ice hockey, in 1983 and 1998 .

history

The franchise was founded in 1951 in Edmonton, Canada from the province of Alberta under the name Edmonton Oil Kings . The Oil Kings also played in the WHL and won the Memorial Cup in 1963 and 1966, before being the first team to be relocated to the United States after the 1975/76 season. In Oregon , the team played under the name Portland Winter Hawks . The former owner and initiator of the move, Brian Shaw, was also a pioneer for the entire league, as today he is the founder of the current finals of the Canadian Hockey League , with the best franchises from the leagues WHL , OHL , and QMJHL as well as the host, applies. The Winter Hawks themselves finally won the Memorial Cup in 1983 and 1998. 1983 won the title while hosting the finals, in 1998 as the winner of the WHL President's Cup , which the team had won for the first time in 1982, but in the final round of the Memorial Cup failed.

1986 the Winter Hawks were again host of the Canadian Junior Championship, but failed to the Olympiques de Hull and the eventual winner Guelph Storm . The 1986 final was originally supposed to take place in New Westminster , but since Expo 86 was taking place in neighboring Vancouver at the same time , this would have overloaded the local hotels, so that the Memorial Cup was relocated to Portland.

The Winter Hawks were also one of the first ice hockey teams to organize professionally organized marketing and charity events for the Games. In addition to various third-break competitions, the franchise has been organizing the " Teddy Bear Toss " (German "Teddybär-Werfen" ) for several years , in which the supporters throw teddy bears on the ice at their team's first goal, which are then donated to local children's aid organizations.

In the summer of 2009, the nickname was merged into Winterhawks .

In the early years, the Winterhawks players wore discarded Chicago Blackhawks jerseys . Since then, the Winterhawks jersey has been identical to that of the Blackhawks with the exception of the "P" shoulder patch. The close ties between teams from Portland and Chicago go back to the founding year of the Blackhawks in 1926, when the then owner Frederic McLaughlin bought a large part of the contracts of the players of the Portland Rosebuds and transferred them to Chicago.
