Hugo Preller (born June 1, 1886 in Uftrungen , Sangerhausen district , German Empire ; † March 15, 1968 in Dornburg , GDR ) was a German historian .

Live and act

One of Hugo Preller's last publications before the professional ban was in 1934 the new edition of volume 375 of the Göschen Collection on English history, originally published in 1914 by Lambert Gerber

Hugo Preller was the son of a country pastor. He studied history and theology in Bonn, Göttingen and Berlin, but had to graduate from the state examination after six semesters due to financial difficulties. He was not called up for military service in World War I due to a congenital hip damage.

As a religion teacher, he first worked in Stralsund and then in Gotha . In 1923 he received his doctorate in Bonn under Fritz Kern with a thesis on world politics in the 19th century . Since the mid-1920s he has published numerous articles and reviews on foreign policy and international relations. As a result of recommendations from Kern and Karl Brandi , he received a teaching position for source and foreign studies at the University of Jena in addition to his school work.

In 1927 he completed his habilitation with the font Salisbury and the Turkish Question in Jena in 1865 . From 1927 to 1939 he taught foreign studies, international relations and recent history there. An appointment as honorary professor failed in 1934 due to opposition from the NSDAP . In 1935 a publication ban appears to have been imposed on Preller. This was followed by pre- trial detention and forced delivery to the Stadtroda insane asylum near Jena, and finally he was transferred to early retirement. He did not become an honorary professor until 1946 and from 1948 he held the chair for historical statology and contemporary history until his retirement in 1952.
