Gary Yaremchuk (born August 15, 1961 in Edmonton , Alberta ) is a retired Canadian ice hockey player who played for the Toronto Maple Leafs in the National Hockey League from 1981 to 1985 . His younger brother Ken is also a former NHL player.
Career
Gary Yaremchuk began his career with the Portland Winter Hawks , for whom he played in the Western Hockey League from 1979 to 1981 . He was then selected in the NHL Entry Draft 1981 in the second round as a total of 24th player from the Toronto Maple Leafs , where he was under contract for a total of four years until 1985. Mainly, however, the attacker was used in Toronto's farm teams at that time , the Cincinnati Tigers from the Central Hockey League and the St. Catharines Saints from the American Hockey League .
On August 13, 1985, the Detroit Red Wings signed Yaremchuk as a free agent , but was only used in their farm team at that time, the Adirondack Red Wings from the American Hockey League , in the 1985/86 season . Following this, Yaremchuk moved to Europe for the first time when he played in the SM-liiga for Jokerit in the 1986/87 season . Yaremchuk stayed in Finland for the next three seasons and completed one season for Oulun Kärpät and two more years for KooKoo Kouvola .
From 1990 to 1994 Yaremchuk was under contract for one season each at EC Ratingen in the 2nd ice hockey Bundesliga , at HC Amiens Somme in the French Ligue Magnus , HC Gardena from the Italian Serie A and the Durham Wasps from the British National League , before ending his career in 1994.
