Career

Player career

Richard Zedník started his career in his hometown at SK Banská Bystrica . He had his first appearance in the men's team in the 1993/94 season in the second-rate first division of Slovakia. Zedník made the scouts of the NHL for the first time at the Junior European Championships in 1993 and 1994 when he represented his home country there. In the 1994 NHL Entry Draft , the Washington Capitals selected him in the tenth round as 249th. He immediately moved overseas and played for the Portland Winter Hawks in the Western Hockey League .

Shortly before the end of the 1995/96 season , he made his debut for the Capitals in the NHL. After playing with the Portland Pirates in the AHL the following year , he made his final breakthrough in the NHL in the 1997/98 season thanks to his speed and precise shot. After nine goals in the regular season, he scored seven times in 17 playoff games . In March 2001, the Capitals gave him together with Jan Bulis and a first-round draft right to the Canadiens de Montréal and received Trevor Linden , Dainius Zubrus and a draft right in return. In Montréal, among other things, he was an asset to the team with his physical game. He improved his stats year after year, scoring over 30 goals for the first time in the 2002/03 season .

For the 2006/07 season he returned to the Washington Capitals, but before the end of the season he moved to the New York Islanders . For the following season he signed as a free agent with the Florida Panthers . He spent the 2009/10 season with Lokomotive Yaroslavl in the Continental Hockey League . He then signed a contract in his home country with HC 05 Banská Bystrica , before Zedník moved to AIK Ishockey in the Elitserien in January 2011 . At the end of the season, his contract was not extended and he has been without a club since then.

Neck injury

On February 10, 2008 in the game of Buffalo Sabers against the Florida Panthers , Zedník was seriously injured. During the final third, he cut his carotid artery after being badly hit by his falling teammate Olli Jokinen's skate . Zedník then ran under his own steam and bleeding heavily to the players' bench, where he was treated immediately. After it became known that Zedník's health was stabilized on the way to the hospital, the NHL decided to continue the game. The cut was later treated surgically in a hospital in Buffalo.

In the following days, Zedník's injury put the safety of the players' equipment in question and sparked a discussion about the introduction of protection for the neck area. Almost a month and a half after the injury, on March 19, Zedník returned to the ice for the first time and ran a few laps for about five to ten minutes before the actual training of the Panthers.

International

Richard Zedník has represented his home country in international championships since 1993. He received his first appointment to the European U18 Junior Championship in 1993. In the following three years he took part in another U18 European and a U20 World Championship. He made his first appearance in the Slovak men's national team at the World Cup of Hockey in 1996 . He also took part in the 2001 , 2003 and 2005 World Championships . Another highlight was the appointment to the national team for the 2006 Winter Olympics in Turin .

Coaching career

From 2011 Zedník coached the youth team of HC Slovan Trstena. In the winter of 2011, Zednik went to HK Altis Námestovo as a youth coach and narrowly escaped a disaster when the roof of the ice rink there collapsed on January 25, 2012. At the time of the collapse, he was leading his team's second training session and, at the first signs of the imminent collapse, he called the children off the ice with his presence of mind.

Between 2014 and 2018, Zedník was assistant coach at HC 05 Banská Bystrica .
