Teddy Bear Toss
The Teddy Bear Toss ( English for teddy bear throw ) is an action as part of ice hockey games , which is usually held at Christmas time. The spectators throw teddy bears onto the ice surface.
This tradition is most widespread in North American minor and junior leagues.
procedure
The spectators are encouraged to bring teddy bears to the stadium for the Teddy Bear Toss and to throw them onto the ice when their team scores first or after the final siren has sounded. The stuffed animals are then collected and donated to hospitals , aid organizations and other non-profit institutions . Often times, the players themselves hand over the teddy bears.
history
The place of origin of the custom is Kitchener , Ontario , where fans tossed teddy bears onto the field during a Kitchener Rangers game. Today the tradition is most prevalent among the Western Hockey League teams from Calgary , Alberta and Portland , Oregon .
On November 25, 2006, fans of the Portland Winter Hawks broke the previous record in the WHL and CHL with 14,361 plush toys that were thrown onto the ice by the 7,485 spectators. The record was broken by fans of the Calgary Hitmen less than a month later when 15,540 teddy bears landed on the ice from the 16,380 spectators in the game against the Prince George Cougars on December 10th . On November 24, 2007, the record went back to the Portland Winterhawks, whose fans managed to throw 20,372 teddy bears onto the ice surface of the Memorial Coliseum with a crowd of 6,343 as part of the tenth campaign of the franchise . However, the goal that led to the throw was denied, which was initially not noticed by the spectators. Six days later, fans of the Lethbridge Hurricanes set a new brand with 22,736 bears. Just days later, on December 2, 2007, fans of the Calgary Hitmen threw 26,919 teddy bears on the ice - only to outdo themselves eight years later with 28,815 teddy bears and other stuffed animals.
