Thomas Hickey (born February 8, 1989 in Calgary , Alberta ) is a Canadian ice hockey player who has been under contract with the New York Islanders in the National Hockey League since 2013 and for their farm team, the Bridgeport Sound Tigers , in the American Hockey League plays in the position of defender .
Career
Hickey made his first appearances in the Western Hockey League in the 2004/05 season , in which he played five games for the Seattle Thunderbirds . From 2005 to 2009, the defender was part of the Thunderbirds squad, with whom he reached the playoffs every year. In the 2007 NHL Entry Draft , he was selected fourth by the Los Angeles Kings and signed a contract in Los Angeles just weeks later. He was then sent back to the WHL, where he was elected to the WHL First All-Star team in the following two seasons. In the 2008/09 season , Hickey also played his first games in the American Hockey League for the Kings farm team, the Manchester Monarchs , where he was part of the squad from 2009 and was active as one of three assistant captains from the 2010/11 season .
On January 15, 2013, Hickey, without having previously played an NHL game, was put on the waiver list by the Los Angeles Kings and signed by the New York Islanders . There he immediately made the leap into the NHL squad and he completed 39 games in his rookie season . In his tenth game, he scored his first goal in the NHL with a hit in extra time against the Canadiens de Montréal .
International
Hickey played for the Canadian selection at the U20 World Junior Championships in 2008 and 2009 . At both tournaments he and his team won the gold medal.
