Evan Brooks Laich (born June 23, 1983 in Wawota , Saskatchewan ) is a Canadian ice hockey player who has had free agent status since November 2017 and to date 841 games for the Washington Capitals , Toronto Maple Leafs and Los Angeles Kings in the National Hockey League has contested on the position of the center . Laich is married to actress Julianne Hough .
Career
Laich began his career with the Moose Jaw Warriors and the Seattle Thunderbirds in the Canadian Junior Western Hockey League , before he was selected ( drafted ) in the 2001 NHL Entry Draft as 193rd in the sixth round by the Ottawa Senators .
For the Senators of the Left Sagittarius completed in the 2003/04 season, his first and only game during his remaining time in Ottawa, he played mainly for the Binghamton Senators , the AHL - farm team of the NHL teams from Ontario . In February 2004 Laich was finally transferred to the Washington Capitals in exchange with Peter Bondra . There he was in four games of the remaining season on the ice, the remaining time he spent with the Portland Pirates in the AHL. There, the Canadians also played in the following Lockout - season , he was promoted to the permanent staff cadre of the Capitals after due to its good performance. After the capitals missed the Stanley Cup playoffs in 2006 , Laich won with the new Washington farm team, the Hershey Bears , the Calder Cup and thus the championship of the AHL.
During the NHL lockout in 2012 played spawning for the Kloten Flyers in the Swiss National League A .
After more than ten years and more than 700 NHL missions in the organization of the Capitals, Laich was handed over to the Toronto Maple Leafs in February 2016, together with Connor Carrick and a second-round vote for the NHL Entry Draft 2016 . In return, Daniel Winnik and a five-round right to vote for the same draft moved to Washington. After he played the season there to the end, he started the 2016/17 season exclusively for the Toronto Marlies farm team in the AHL. After his contract expired in summer 2017, he received a trial contract with the Los Angeles Kings in September , which, however, did not result in a permanent engagement for the time being. However, Laich continued to train with the team and was finally awarded a one-year contract in October of the same year in response to multiple injuries. However, this was dissolved after about a month and twelve NHL missions.
