An appearance by Justin Timberlake and Janet Jackson at the halftime show causes a stir when a Janet Jackson nipple is shown for a moment. The incident is called " Nipplegate " in allusion to the Watergate affair .
- Ljubljana / Slovenia : In Handball - European Championship Men who wins German national team under coach Heiner Brand in the final against hosts Slovenia with 30:25.
- Mars : The landing vehicle Opportunity rolls from its landing platform onto the surface of the planet. Over the next few months, it will explore the geological details of the Meridiani Planum , a lowland plain near the Martian equator.
- Mina / Saudi Arabia : A panic occurred during this year's Hajj of Muslims at the Jamarat Bridge near Mecca . In the crowd, 244 pilgrims are kicked or crushed to death.
- The Convention for the Protection of Albatrosses and Petrels comes into force in five of the eleven signatory states to date . Australia , Ecuador , New Zealand , Spain and South Africa ratified the agreement between 2001 and 2003.

- Darwin / Australia : In Australia, the first transcontinental north-south passenger train , called The Ghan , ends its 3,000 km maiden voyage from Adelaide via Alice Springs to Darwin on the north coast. He left Adelaide on February 1st.
- France : When evaluating recordings from the Hubble Space Telescope's spectrometer, European astronomers discover for the first time evidence of carbon and oxygen deposits in the atmosphere of an exoplanet , i. H. a short distance from the solar system distant planet . The same has been known for a long time and bears the name Osiris .
- Washington, DC / United States : Secretary of State Colin Powell admits in an interview with the newspaper The Washington Post one that the in on 5 February 2003 Security Council of the United Nations presented evidence for the existence of weapons of mass destruction in Iraq have proved to be forgeries. At that time, he gave a lecture on mobile Iraqi chemical weapons laboratories using satellite images. When asked if he would have advocated an attack on Iraq at the time without evidence of weapons of mass destruction, Powell says, "I don't know."

- Riga / Latvia : Prime Minister Einars Repše resigns.

- Berlin / Germany : Federal Chancellor Gerhard Schröder ( SPD ) announces that he will resign from the party chairmanship at a special SPD party conference in March and propose Franz Müntefering as his successor. SPD general secretary Olaf Scholz had previously announced that he would resign during the special party conference.
- London / United Kingdom : After almost 15 years of professional career, boxer Lennox Lewis declares his resignation. He is the reigning world heavyweight champion.
- Morecambe / United Kingdom : 19 mussel collectors from Asia are killed in Morecambe Bay on the Lancashire coast when the incoming tide surprises them.
- Moscow / Russia : 40 people are killed and around 100 other people are injured in a serious bomb attack in the Moscow subway .
- Papua New Guinea : 37 people are killed in an earthquake measuring 7.0 M w .

- Bern / Switzerland : In a referendum , the counter-proposal to the Avanti initiative and the revision of tenancy law is rejected, the initiative to keep dangerous criminals in custody for life is accepted. In addition, a second tube for the Gotthard road tunnel in central Switzerland is clearly rejected.

- Brunei : The Swedish King Carl XVI. Gustaf praised the dictatorial sultan of the host country during his state visit, which, however, led to critical comments in Sweden.
- Genshagen / Germany : Federal Chancellor Gerhard Schröder and French President Jacques Chirac meet for consultations in the Brandenburg city.

- Pforzheim / Germany : In the collective bargaining dispute between IG Metall Baden-Württemberg and the employers' association Südwestmetall , a pilot agreement is reached for the metal and electrical industry in the state of Baden-Württemberg . It provides for income increases in two steps, from March 2004 by 2.2% and from March 2005 by 2.7%.
- Seoul / South Korea : A team of Korean researchers under Hwang Woo-suk explains that they have succeeded in extracting stem cells from a cloned human embryo . The precursors of various tissue cells were grown from these stem cells , which would represent a breakthrough for therapeutic cloning.

- Washington, DC / United States : A US National Guard soldier has been arrested for attempted espionage for the al-Qaeda terrorist network . As the military authorities in Washington confirmed on Friday, the 26-year-old soldier tried - albeit in vain - to contact the terrorist organization via the Internet in order to divulge secrets about the equipment of armored vehicles . - China : 90 people were killed in two fires in eastern China. 51 people died in a shopping mall in Jilin City in northeast China and 39 people died in a village temple in Zhejiang Province.

- Tehran / Iran : There are parliamentary elections in Iran. Numerous liberal or reform-oriented candidates were not admitted by the conservative Guardian Council, so that the election is criticized as not fair.
