The Sharjah International Airport ( english Sharjah International Airport ) is the third busiest airport in the United Arab Emirates , he is located 13 kilometers east of the city Sharjah .
The airport is one of the most important cargo airports in the Middle East and is also served by Lufthansa Cargo .
The airport is also the home base of the low-cost airline Air Arabia .

Today's Sharjah Airport was built in the 1970s and opened on January 1, 1977.
It replaced the old airport located closer to the city. This was opened in 1932 and served in particular by Imperial Airways . It was the first airport in what is now the Gulf Cooperation Council . The Royal Air Force later used it as Royal Air Force Station Sharjah , or RAF Sharjah for short, until 1971 . Most recently there was a season of Avro Shackleton here . The former runway is now part of King Abdul Aziz Street in the city center.
A-10 Thunderbolt II bombers of the United States Air Force were stationed here during Operation Desert Shield / Storm in 1990/1991 .
Transport links
Expressway 88 runs from the airport to the Corniche (coastal road) of Sharjah, intersecting Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road , which is connected via a motorway interchange.
Incidents
- On 10 February 2004 when landing crashed a Fokker F-50 of Kish Air , with 43 of the 46 passengers died (see also Kish Air flight 7170 ) .
- On 21 October 2009 a cargo plane crashed the Azza Transport of type Boeing 707 shortly after takeoff near the airport in the desert. All 6 crew members were killed.
