occupation

On the way to Cold Mountain (original title: Cold Mountain ) by Anthony Minghella from 2003 is a film adaptation of the novel of the same name by Charles Frazier .

action

The film begins with a detailed depiction of the crater battle . The cut often alternates between war scenes and scenes at home in Cold Mountain.

Shortly before the outbreak of the American Civil War , the educated pastor's daughter Ada Monroe and the simple craftsman Inman get to know each other. But the beginning of the war tears the unlikely couple apart, and Inman goes to war on the Confederate side . All able-bodied men go to war, the others stay at home as home guards, protecting their villages and cruelly persecuting deserters and those who give them shelter.

Inman fought in war for three years and saw countless of his friends die. He keeps the book and the photo of Ada, which keep him alive, like treasure. Lying injured in the military hospital after trying to transport a fatally wounded comrade from the battlefield, he receives a letter from Ada in which she asks Inman to return as soon as possible. When Inman's wounds are halfway healed, he dares to escape from the hospital. As a deserter , he is released for shooting and on his journey through a land of devastation - always with the aim of getting back to his lover in Cold Mountain - he repeatedly meets unexpected enemies. So Inman saves Sara, a young war widow with a small child, with whom he has spent one night, from looting and rape. In addition to scenes of cruelty and brutality, there are also examples of compassion. An old woman tends him in her hut and sacrifices one of her goats for him.

Meanwhile, Ada tries desperately and despite all difficulties to run her deceased father's run-down farm . The headstrong and resolute Ruby turns out to be a valuable help. The plot follows the life path of these three people, who were all uprooted in their own way by the turmoil of the war. Ruby's father is shot by the Home Guard near his hut. When Ruby and Ada rush to his aid, Ada meets a wild stranger. It is Inman.

Reviews

  • In the USA, the film received a largely positive response from the critics, which is reflected in Rotten Tomatoes and Metacritic in positive ratings of 71% and 73% respectively.
  • Victoria Alexander talks about mutual chemistry with Nicole Kidman and Jude Law on filmsinreview.com and describes the film as "terrible" and "slow".
  • Director Spike Lee criticized the, in his opinion, complete elimination of the role of blacks in the southern states of the 19th century.
  • Andreas Borcholte from Der Spiegel says that on the way to Cold Mountain I have “almost everything a future classic movie needs. His top-class leading actors alone do not manage to breathe life into the story of a longing that has endured fear and horror. ”With the opening sequence, director Minghella“ now clearly tries to match Spielberg's ruthless opening sequence from Saving Private Ryan ”. Minghella, on the other hand, “deliberately avoided the problem of slavery in the southern states,” “by casting his Ruby, an African-American in Frazier's novel, with the blonde all-American girl Zellweger.” After 155 minutes and one “too conciliatory happy ending ”one remains“ left behind at a loss ”.
  • The German Film and Media Evaluation FBW in Wiesbaden awarded the film the title valuable.
