Indulis Emsis (born January 2, 1952 in Salacgrīva , Latvian SSR ) is a Latvian biologist , Green politician, former Prime Minister and Speaker of the Parliament of Latvia.

Life

Emsis studied biology at the Latvian University and graduated successfully in 1975. In 1986 he received his PhD in biology. From 1990 he worked as an environmental researcher. In 1990 he became one of the founders of the Latvian Green Party and was Minister of the Environment in the 1990s, particularly committed to keeping the Baltic Sea clean . He is currently one of the three leaders of the Green Party.

On March 9, 2004, he became Prime Minister of Latvia, where he led a minority center-right government. He was the world's first head of government for a green party . Like the Latvian Greens as a whole, Emsis is considered to be rather conservative. On December 2, 2004, Aigars Kalvītis was elected as the new Prime Minister. On November 7, 2006 Emsis was elected chairman of the Saeima parliament. He resigned from this office on September 24, 2007. His successor was Gundars Daudze .
