Zdeněk Blatný (born January 14, 1981 in Brno ) is a former Czech ice hockey player who was last under contract at Dornbirner EC in the Erste Bank Ice Hockey League .
Career
Zdeněk Blatný began his career as an ice hockey player in his hometown in the youth department of HC Kometa Brno , where he was active until 1998. He then moved to the Canadian Junior Western Hockey League , in which he ran up for the Seattle Thunderbirds and Kootenay Ice . With Kootenay he won the Ed Chynoweth Cup , the championship of the WHL, in the 1999/2000 season . He contributed to this success with 27 scorer points in the 21 playoff games. With 17 assists, the winger was the best assists in the entire league. He was also elected to the second All-Star Team of the WHL East. In the 1999 NHL Entry Draft he was selected in the third round as the 68th player by the Atlanta Thrashers . For this he was only used sporadically in the National Hockey League from 2001 to 2004 . Mostly he played for their farm teams , the Chicago Wolves in the American Hockey League and the Greenville Grrrowl in the ECHL .
During the lockout in the 2004/05 season , Blatný was in Europe with the Pelicans Lahti from the Finnish SM-liiga and in his Czech homeland with HC Znojemští Orli from the Extraliga under contract. After resumption of play in the NHL, the junior world champion of 2001 signed on September 29, 2005 as a free agent with the Boston Bruins . Although he was on the ice in five games for Boston in the NHL, he was able to convince with 30 scorer points in 35 games with their AHL farm team Providence Bruins . In exchange for Brian Eklund , the Czech was transferred to the Tampa Bay Lightning on February 8, 2006 . In the following year and a half, however, he only played for their AHL farm team Springfield Falcons . On January 12, 2007 he signed a contract with MODO Hockey from the Swedish Elitserien , with which he won the national championship at the end of the 2006/07 season .
Following this success, the former NHL player at the beginning changed the 2007/08 season for HC Ambri-Piotta in the Swiss National League A . After he had only played ten games for his new club, he returned to the Czech Republic and ran there in the following two and a half seasons for the Bílí Tygři Liberec . In November 2010 he received a contract with the Hanover Indians from the 2nd ice hockey Bundesliga , but left it again after a few games and played four games for HC Košice before he was signed by HC Dukla Trenčín in January 2011 . For the 2011/12 season he first moved to the Grazer 99ers and was there after a contract extension until March 2012, before he transferred to the Vienna Capitals . After he was there for over a year under contract, he moved within the league to Orli Znojmo , where he also completed a full season and was also represented in the play-offs. On October 10, 2014, his move to Denmark to join the Frederikshavn White Hawks was finally announced. After the mutually agreed contract contained a clause that served to terminate the contract within one month, this option was chosen to terminate the contract in the first week of November 2014. After a few days of speculation about another transfer of the Czech, the Dornbirn EC announced the signing of the 1.87 m tall winger on November 11, 2014. On the following weekend, the Czech made his debut in a 3-1 home win over HC Bozen and equalized the 1-1 draw in the 37th minute. After the 2014/15 season, Zdeněk Blatný received no more contract with Dornbirn EC and then ended his career.
International
For the Czech Republic Blatný took part in the U20 World Junior Championship in 2001 . In this he became world champion with his team. He contributed to this success with five goals and two assists in seven games.
