Jonathan Darryl "Jon" Klemm (born January 8, 1970 in Cranbrook , British Columbia ) is a former Canadian ice hockey player and current coach who played 878 games for the Nordiques de Québec , Colorado Avalanche between 1987 and 2009, among other things , Chicago Blackhawks , Dallas Stars and Los Angeles Kings in the National Hockey League on the position of defender . In the service of the Colorado Avalanche, Klemm won the Stanley Cup twice in 1996 and 2001 .
Career
Klemm began his career in 1987 in the Canadian Junior Western Hockey League with the Seattle Thunderbirds . Just a year later, the defender moved within the league to the Spokane Chiefs . There, Klemm developed into one of the top performers and was one of the defenders with the highest points in the team. In his first year, the Canadian scored 40 points in 66 games. Two more successful years followed, in which the right-shooter was able to improve again. Klemm's best year was also his last with the Chiefs. In the 1990/91 season, the Canadian scored 74 points in 87 games.
Jon Klemm then joined the Nordiques de Québec from the NHL as a free agent in the summer of 1991 , but they mostly used him in the American Hockey League with their farm team at the time , the Halifax Citadels . Still, the defender got the chance to prove himself in the NHL. In the four years that Klemm was under contract with the Nordiques, he only played 15 NHL games. After the team ran into financial difficulties and was ultimately sold to a group of investors from Denver in 1995 , the Quebec Nordiques were henceforth called the Colorado Avalanche. The 1995/96 season was extremely successful for the trained defender, as he developed into a regular player and was able to win the Stanley Cup with the new team . Five years later, the Canadian was able to repeat this success with the Avalanche and again won the North American championship with the franchise .
During the 2003/04 season, however, he moved back to the NHL. There he signed a contract with the Dallas Stars , where he was henceforth also one of the service providers and completed almost all of the main round games. The then 34-year-old suspended the game year 2004/05 due to the lockout . Two more years followed with the Stars, before Klemm joined the Los Angeles Kings in the summer of 2007 , for which he only wore the jersey 22 times and was often used in the AHL with the Manchester Monarchs . His contract was not renewed at the end of the season.
For the season 2008/09 Jon Klemm finally signed a contract with the Straubing Tigers from the German Ice Hockey League , which was his last season as an active ice hockey player. The Canadian then took over a coaching position as assistant to Hardy Sauter in the Western Hockey League with the Spokane Chiefs for the 2009/10 season . He worked there until summer 2013. The Canadian then moved back to Texas , where he trained as a junior player for four years. For the 2017/18 season he returned to the WHL as an assistant coach and took over a position with the Kootenay Ice .
