Corey Schwab (born November 4, 1970 in North Battleford , Saskatchewan ) is a former Canadian ice hockey goalkeeper and current coach . During his career, he played for the New Jersey Devils , Tampa Bay Lightning , Vancouver Canucks and Toronto Maple Leafs in the National Hockey League from 1995 to 2004 . He is currently the goalkeeping coach of the San Jose Sharks in the NHL and for their farm team , the Worcester Sharks from theAmerican Hockey League , active.

Career

Schwab first played at the age of 18 in the second-rate Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League with the North Battleford North Stars from his hometown. During the 1988/89 season, the Seattle Thunderbirds took him from the higher-class Western Hockey League under contract. After a season as a substitute goalkeeper, in which he was able to win 15 of his 27 games, he was assigned the regular place in his last junior season 1990/91 and came on further missions.

After he had already been selected in the well-filled NHL Entry Draft in 1990 in the tenth round in 200th place by the New Jersey Devils , he moved to the Devils organization in the summer of 1991. First he was used for two years with the Utica Devils in the American Hockey League and Cincinnati Cyclones in the East Coast Hockey League and International Hockey League, respectively, without being able to attract attention, before he started regularly with the from the 1993/94 season Albany River Rats in the AHL was used. There he shared the post in goal with Mike Dunham from the 1994/95 season . Together they won the Harry "Hap" Holmes Memorial Award that year for the fewest goals conceded in the regular season and led the River Rats to victory in the Calder Cup final, awarding both of them the Jack A. Butterfield Trophy as most valuable players in the playoffs were. In the following season, Schwab was promoted to substitute for the NHL team due to his constant performance, but was rarely used in the shadow of Martin Brodeur . In order to allow the Canadian the opportunity for more missions, the Devils transferred him to the Tampa Bay Lightning at the end of the 1995/96 season , where he was used more often, but not linked to previous performances. After he had to make his way back to the minor leagues in the course of his third season and he could only win eight of 40 games in the NHL in the 1998/99 season , Schwab went unprotected by his team in the 1999 NHL Expansion Draft . There he was chosen by the newly founded Atlanta Thrashers , who, however, after a few assignments in their farm team, the Orlando Solar Bears from the IHL, handed him over to the Vancouver Canucks in October 1999 . In his two years with the Canucks, Schwab played mainly for their farm teams in the AHL and IHL and only played six games in the NHL. In the summer of 2001, he therefore moved to the Toronto Maple Leafs as a free agent , where he signed a one-year contract. As a replacement for Curtis Joseph , he came on 30 missions and achieved a career record of twelve wins. Nevertheless, he returned the following game year to the New Jersey Devils, with whom he was able to win the 2003 Stanley Cup . The 2003/04 season ended early for Schwab in mid-November because he suffered a protracted groin injury. The three games he played this season were also the last of his career.

After the loss of the 2004/05 NHL season caused by the lockout , Schwab took the post of goalkeeping coach of the Tampa Bay Lightning in the summer of 2005. He filled it for a total of three seasons before the Lightning signed a new goalkeeping coach with Cap Raeder following a change of ownership . The Canadian then left the organization and accepted an offer from the San Jose Sharks to relieve goalkeeping coach Wayne Thomas and take care of the training of the young goalkeepers.
