Career
Raeder first played from the 1972/73 season at the University of New Hampshire . In the summer of 1973 he was selected in both the NHL Amateur Draft by the Montréal Canadiens and the WHA Amateur Draft by the New England Whalers . Raeder remained in New Hampshire until 1975. After he had played in the North American Hockey League in the 1975/76 season , he ran for two games with the Whalers in the World Hockey Association (WHA). In the 1976/77 season Raeder stood for the Rhode Island Reds in the American Hockey League (AHL) and the New England Whalers in goal, before he let his career end in the following three seasons, one of them in the AHL.
For the 1980/81 season, Raeder took on a post as assistant coach at his former college for two years. After a short break, he was promoted to assistant coach at Clarkson University in 1984 and promoted to head coach a year later. Until the end of the 1987/88 season, Raeder remained coach at Clarkson and always ended the seasons with a positive balance. From the 1988/89 season , the American took the post as assistant coach under Barry Melrose at the Los Angeles Kings from the National Hockey League . Stayed there until 1995 and was lucky enough to coach Wayne Gretzky . This was followed by two seasons as an assistant in Boston before the San Jose Sharks signed him for the 2000/01 season . After a year as assistant coach of the NHL team, he was the following season Scout of the Sharks and assistant coach of the Sharks farm team , the Cleveland Barons . After the Sharks split from coach Darryl Sutter during the 2002/03 season , Raeder took over the post of head coach on an interim basis for a game . The game ended in a 3-2 win in overtime against the Phoenix Coyotes . From then on, Raeder was responsible for the franchise's scouting tasks again until the summer of 2008 , before Melrose took over the post of head coach of the Tampa Bay Lightning after a long break and had Raeder, alongside Wes Walz and Rick Tocchet , signed as one of three assistant coaches.
