Dean Lombardi (born March 5, 1958 in Holyoke , Massachusetts ) is an American ice hockey official . In the National Hockey League he was general manager of the San Jose Sharks and the Los Angeles Kings .

Career

Lombardi began his career first with the San Jose Sharks in the NHL, which began playing in the 1991/92 season as a newly founded franchise. He assisted Jack Ferreira in his exercise as the team's general manager. After the first season was extremely disappointing for the young franchise, Ferreira was fired at the end of the season. At the start of the new season, the then coach George Kingston , Chuck Grillo and Lombardi took on the management duties to a third each. With the departure of Kingston after the 1992/93 season and Grillo after the 1996/97 season , Lombardi took over the sole position at the beginning of the 1997/98 season . Lombardi made a name for himself as one of the most strategic general managers in the entire league over the next seven years. In addition to signing veteran players, he showed amazing skills in discovering young talent. Players like Evgeni Nabokov , Marco Sturm , Patrick Marleau , Scott Hannan , Brad Stuart , Jonathan Cheechoo and Vesa Toskala are among his discoveries, which he selected in the Entry Drafts . Lombardi was also able to sign well-known players such as Owen Nolan , Teemu Selänne , Vincent Damphousse and Adam Graves , in whose shadow the talents could develop in peace. After a weak 2002/03 season for the team and some controversial personnel decisions, Lombardi had to leave the franchise in March 2003, along with the then head coach Darryl Sutter .

Shortly after his release, the Philadelphia Flyers hired him as a scout for the Western Conference . The American held this position until June 2006, before he was hired by the Los Angeles Kings , where he then served as President and General Manager.

Lombardi also acted as General Manager of Team USA at the World Cup of Hockey 2016 , from which the team was eliminated in the group stage.

After more than 10 years as General Manager and President of the Kings, in which the team won two Stanley Cups , Lombardi and his head coach Darryl Sutter were sacked after the 2016/17 season . His successor was his previous assistant Rob Blake .
