Kenneth Scott Hannan (born January 23, 1979 in Richmond , British Columbia ) is a retired Canadian ice hockey player . The defender played over 1,000 National Hockey League games , most of them for the San Jose Sharks , who selected him in the first round of the 1997 NHL Entry Draft . With the Canadian national team , he won the gold medal at the 2004 World Cup of Hockey and the silver medal at the 2005 World Cup .
Career
Hannan began his career as a junior player in the British Columbia Amateur Hockey Association with the Surrey Flyers , before playing his first two games in the Western Hockey League , one of Canada's three major junior leagues, with the Tacoma Rockets in the 1994/95 season . After the season the team moved to Kelowna and was called Kelowna Rockets from then on . There Hannan played his first full season, which turned out to be meager in terms of points. In the 1996/97 season he shone with good results as a scoring defender and was selected in the 1997 NHL Entry Draft by the San Jose Sharks in the first round at position 23.
In the 1997/98 season, Hannan played less, but scored ten goals in 47 games and prepared 30 goals. At the beginning of the 1998/99 season Hannan was allowed to play five games in the National Hockey League and scored two assists. He also played twice for the Sharks' farm team , the Kentucky Thoroughblades in the American Hockey League . He was then sent back to the WHL, where he spent the rest of the season and improved his personal point record to 45. He was also elected to the WHL's West First All-Star Team. In the 1999/2000 season he finally rose to the pros and his missions were divided between the San Jose Sharks and the farm team in Kentucky about evenly. He scored his first hit in the NHL. From the following season he was a permanent member of the NHL squad. While he presented himself as a good scorer in the WHL, Hannan developed into a defensive specialist in the NHL. In the following years it always achieved a value of around 20 points. In the 2003/04 season , the San Jose Sharks started from second place in the Western Conference in the playoffs and came to the conference finals, in which they failed at the Calgary Flames . This meant the greatest success in the history of the California team at that time.
By the end of the 2006/07 season, Hannan developed into one of the leading players in the Northern Californian team. Behind team captain Patrick Marleau and alongside Joe Thornton he was alternate captain of the San Jose Sharks. After the season he left the Sharks as a free agent and signed a three-year contract with the Colorado Avalanche . After signing a contract with the Nashville Predators in August 2012 , he returned to the San Jose Sharks on April 3, 2013, for which the Predators were given a performance-based option.
Early in the 2014/15 season, Hannan played his 1,000th game in the NHL. After the end of the season, his expiring contract was not extended. In February 2016, shortly after his 37th birthday, Hannan officially announced the end of his active career.
