The Schönbielhütte is an alpine refuge in the Swiss Alps . It is located on a promontory opposite the Matterhorn , near Zermatt at an altitude of 2694 m in the Valais Alps . The hut is owned by the Monte Rosa in Sion section of the Swiss Alpine Club (SAC).
The Schönbiel mountain hut is the last option to stay on the “ Haute Route ” Chamonix- Zermatt. The Patrouille des Glaciers passes the Schönbiel post, which is located on the glacier below the hut.
History of the hut
The Stockje mountain hut (36 places) is considered to be the forerunner of today's Schönbielhütte. It was built in 1875, but was destroyed by an avalanche in 1890 . For this reason, the mountain hut was rebuilt in 1909 as the Schönbühl hut with 45 seats and a little higher. Edward Whymper , the first to conquer the Matterhorn, was present at the inauguration of the hut. In 1955 the hut was modernized and expanded.
Ascent
The ascent to the hut starts at the mountain station of the Schwarzseebahn ( 2583 m ) on the lake of the same name . From there to the hut in about 2½ hours or directly from Zermatt in 4 hours.
