Normal way From the Schönbielhütte over the southeast and south ridge

The Schönbielhorn is a 3472 m high peak in the Valais Alps . It is north above the Zmutt glacier , southeast of the Dent Blanche . The summit is connected to the Pointe de Zinal in the north by a ridge almost two kilometers long. To the west of this ridge lies the Schönbiel glacier , to the east the Hohwäng glacier . The summit structure is a ridge that runs in a north-south direction; from the summit of the Schönbielhorn, this ridge runs about 250 meters south. Then the ridge divides into a south-west and a south-east ridge, the latter leads to the Gemsspitz ( 3182  m ), the last elevation at the southern end of this mountain ridge.

The Schönbielhorn is best known as a panoramic mountain. In addition to the Dent Blanche , the Obergabelhorn in the northeast and the Matterhorn and Dent d'Hérens in the south are well-known peaks in the immediate vicinity.

Climbs

The usual ascent leads from the Schönbielhütte first on tracks in a north-easterly direction to the notch between Schönbielhorn and Gemsspitz (Oberer Blausatz, 3209  m ). From there it goes first over the southeast ridge to the point where the southeast and southwest ridge unite. The ascent route usually leads directly along the ridge, occasionally you can turn right into the flank. Once you have reached the southern ridge of the Schönbielhorn, you continue on the ridge, far less steep but somewhat exposed to the highest point. With an appropriate choice of route climbing difficulties lie anywhere on the First Difficulty . Allow around 2½ hours for this ascent route from the Schönbielhütte.

The north ridge of the Schönbielhorn does not present any particular difficulties. This makes it possible to cross the Schönbielhorn as part of an ascent of the Pointe de Zinal . The deepest notch between Schönbielhorn and Pointe de Zinal is at an altitude of 3358  m .

The south ridge of the Schönbielhorn can also be reached from the west from the Schönbielhütte. At first, stay on the path leading to the Schönbiel glacier and leave it at P. 3052 towards the east.
