Career

Pickard was selected in the 2007 Bantam Draft of the Western Hockey League (WHL) in the second round in 37th position by the Seattle Thunderbirds . After another season for a junior team from Winnipeg , he decided to move to the WHL and immediately established himself as the goalkeeper of the Thunderbirds. In the 2008/09 WHL season , Calvin Pickard reached the WHL play-offs for the only time in his major junior career with his team, but was eliminated there in the first round against the Spokane Chiefs . In the following season , Pickard was used for the Thunderbirds in 62 of 68 games. Although Seattle was one of the worst teams in the league and Pickard only achieved 16 wins with his team, he finished the season with a catch rate of 91.4% and was chosen because of this performance in the WHL West First All-Star team.

In the 2010 NHL Entry Draft , Calvin Pickard was selected in the second round in 49th position by the Colorado Avalanche . In the WHL season 2010/11 he completed all 68 games for the Thunderbirds and achieved a catch rate of 91.6% and 27 wins as well as a nomination in the WHL West Second All-Star Team. Following this season he signed on March 25, 2013 a three-year entry - level contract with the Colorado Avalanche. He then returned for a fourth season in the Western Hockey League and was used in 64 games for Seattle in the 2011/12 season .

In his four seasons in the Western Hockey League Calvin Pickard set two WHL records with a total of 14,025 minutes and 7,727 saved shots; In addition, he was used in 241 of 288 possible games - four games less than record holder Kurtis Mucha , who was active from 2005 to 2010 for the Portland Winterhawks and the Kamloops Blazers .

Following his WHL career, Pickard was appointed to Colorado's Lake Erie Monsters farm team from the American Hockey League (AHL). In his first season as a professional, he was used in 47 AHL games for the Monsters and achieved 20 wins and a catch rate of 91.8%. In the 2014/15 season Pickard made his debut in the goal of the Colorado Avalanche and came there in 16 games to a catch rate of 93.2%. In June 2017, he was selected by the Vegas Golden Knights in the 2017 NHL Expansion Draft . However, the Canadian gave this to the Toronto Maple Leafs in October 2017 and in return received Tobias Lindberg and a six- round vote in the 2018 NHL Entry Draft . In Toronto he was mainly used with the Marlies and won the Calder Cup with the team in the AHL playoffs 2018 . In the following pre-season he was supposed to be sent back to the AHL via the waiver in October 2018 , but the Philadelphia Flyers signed him . After eleven missions in Philadelphia, the Canadian reached the Arizona Coyotes in November 2018 via the same route . There he ended the season and then moved to the Detroit Red Wings under a two-year contract .

International

Calvin Pickard represented his home country with the Canadian national team for the first time at the U18 World Junior Championship in 2010 . In this tournament he was used in six games and missed the medal ranks with his team with a seventh place.

For the senior national team of Canada he made his debut at the World Cup in 2016 , where he won the gold medal with the team and came second to Cam Talbot as the second goalkeeper on two missions. At the 2017 World Cup, he won the silver medal.
