The 1948/49 season of the ice hockey league was the first season of the newly established highest German ice hockey league . The game began in autumn 1948 with six teams. German champion was the EV Füssen , which was able to win its first championship title. The league was organized by the German Association for Ice Sports (DAGE).

The six teams from the final round of the German Ice Hockey Championship 1947/48 were qualified for the Oberliga . The Krefelder EV declined to participate. To determine the sixth team, a qualification of the best unqualified teams of the national leagues was carried out at the beginning of the season, which the Cologne EK won.

The six teams played a single round, so that each club played a home and an away game against the other teams. However, not all games were played as planned. The first-placed team at the end of the single round won the German championship. For the following season , the league was increased to eight teams. The promoters identified in autumn 1949 were the Krefelder EV and the EV Tegernsee .
