In 1888 the German National Ice Skating Association was founded in Berlin . In 1897 the association was renamed the German Ice Skating Association . He represented the interests of all ice sports in Germany, with the ice skating associations of Austria and the Netherlands also being members in the early days . After exiting the rolling athlete was from the DERAG on October 18, 1947 German Association for ice sports (DAGE) . On September 18, 1949, the DAGE in Mannheim founded the German Ice Sports Association as the successor to the German Ice Skating Association . As its counterpart in the GDR , the German Ice Skating Association of the GDR (DELV) was founded in 1958 . After the German unification, the DELV became part of the DEV.

In the course of time there was an increasing loss of importance of the association, since with the German Ice Hockey Federation (DEB, founded 1963), the German Ice Skating Union (DEU, 1964), the German Speed Skating Association (DESG), the German The Ice Stock Association (DESV) and the German Curling Association (DCV, 1966) founded five individual sports associations and the DEV's work was thus deprived of its foundation.

Until 2006, the role of the DEV consisted almost exclusively in the administration of the memberships of the professional associations in the German Sports Federation . After the dissolution decision made on July 22, 2006, effective December 31, 2006, the five individual associations now belong to the German Olympic Sports Confederation as independent organizations. In accordance with the statutes, the DEV's assets were transferred to the Bavarian Ice Sports Association when the Munich office was closed .
