As in the previous year, the eight participating teams initially contested a single round, after which the best four clubs qualified for the championship round. There, the German champions were finally determined in a new single round, taking the preliminary round points with them. The other four teams contested, also taking the preliminary round points, a relegation round. The relegation games were abolished so that the last placed team was relegated directly to the league , while the champions of this division were allowed to participate in the Bundesliga next year.
